Should we hear by the end of March?

Just what it says, pretty much. Curious if we're supposed to get accepted/rejected by the end of March, or how this works.

Official word on when you'll hear

As we said in our application acknowledgment email/letter: let us know if you haven't heard from us by the end of March.

There's no way our admissions process will be complete much before then. I will let people know as soon as I do where they stand. We're as quick as we can be. I know waiting is tough--it's hard on us, too!

Thanks, Neile! You're the

Thanks, Neile! You're the best! I remember last year when you responded to my nervous freak-out about paypal miscues.

Must be fun to work with all of us high-maintenance types! lol

Well then, another annoying question for you!

Are you reading applications in order based on the date they were submitted, or is there any such order?

You can also catch me on www.authonomy.com - my novel's name is Wizards!.

Application Reading Order

The answer to this is pretty much, but there are exceptions.

We send the applications in batches to our readers as they come in, but from then on it's in the readers' hands which order they read in and/or report scores. They tend to read somewhat in order, but it's not unusual that they hold back on a couple before giving a final score or they miss a couple when reporting, and I have to prompt them for the scores. They even sometimes change their minds on scores when they've read more, or when a story sticks in their minds more than they thought it would at the time.

Keeps me on my toes!

That also doesn't mean that all three readers take the same amount of time to read the applications or to turn in their scores, and we don't make any decisions about anyone until we've received all three scores.

Probably more information than you wanted. Reading is continuing as I type.

Info I found

The information in here may be dated, but I bet it still works a lot like this.

http://www.electricstory.com//reviews/archive/crimeaarchive.aspx?title=cry_me_a_9

It's an essay by Howard Waldrop.  It is a lot cynical and can be tough to read, might even be discouraging, but the parts at the beginning about his role as a story reviewer may be helpful.

You will have to get an electric story account to read it, but it's free.

For now, do what I do; take deep breaths and long naps until you hear something.

Thanks for posting that

Thanks for posting that Link, Oso :) I've been looking for that one for a while, but kept getting a broken link.

Here's how it works... I think.

If you're in, they call.  Usually in the evening from what I've heard.  There are 18 slots.  If they fill all the slots, it takes time to call and time to work out the details because some people get accepted to Clarion West and Clarion or maybe Odyssey or culinary school or the ever popular mail-order dragonkeeping seminary and arrangements must be made to allow for those next in line to receive their prize.

{pause to breathe}

If you're not in, expect an email.  That's what I got last year and frankly it was the nicest rejection letter I ever received, with the exception of the mail-order dragonkeeping seminary who was kind enough to send along a little scale model.

Yeah, I got a problem with puns.

Mid-March

The FAQ says we'll hear by mid-March.  That won't stop my heart from skiopping beats every time the phone rings between now and whenever I hear something.  For anyone else who also applied to East, they say we'll hear by March 20th.  I definitely have a preference (withheld), but I'll be happy to get into either.

Good luck to everyone.  I can't wait to meet you all (he said optimistically).
