They're phoning people!!

Just got the call. Good luck everyone!

Okay, per Oso's suggestion, I started another thread for people who've been formally accepted. Looking forward to reading some responses over there!

That other Clarion

Anyone know any confirmed acceptances to San Diego?

I know one

I know one, but she/he's not allowed to tell anyone yet. I applied extremely last night to Clarion in case I didn't get into CW, and I haven't heard anything, personally.

Haven't heard anything yet,

Haven't heard anything yet, and Friday is their self-mandated deadline. It's a bit frustrating because they don't have a forum like this, so there's no communication going on at all. At least we get to vent and fret and commiserate about the West workshop!

My Gawd!

We've translated the book the aliens gave us!  "They're Phoning People" -- it ... it's a cookbook!  For takeout!  Takeout people!

All of you, stop getting on board this forum!  Don't you see?  Don't you understand?!

They're Phoning PEOPLE!

All in good fun...

Nice, But ...

Three points.  One, I have not yet been called.  Two, my robot armies will soon conquer the red area. Three, I am also in control of the yellow arrowy areas.

You have been warned.

Wait a minute...

I thought you were in?  Guess I need to go back and read the thread...  Or get my gears updated. ;)

Ha!

Ah, but you see, I occupy the white space around the diagram and arrows.

You can't conquer the blank areas of the page!

(also, cute diagram, it made me smile :) )

You may keep your frozen and

You may keep your frozen and featureless tundra.  It interests me not.

Besides, I'd have to weatherize my robot armies, and that's such a hassle.

You See Tundra

I see it more as clouds or feathers or the underbelly of kitten.  White space can be anything.

Re: weatherizing, we do sell a package for robot armies good down to -30c.  So if you need to invade Antarctica, there are options.

(on the more depressing side of things, I'm pretty sure since my app was in early the readers have likely gotten past it and I'm doomed...  Good luck to everyone who applied later!)(though maybe I'm one of the ones whose writing will stick in their minds, who knows?  I guess I shouldn't dwell too much on anything til I hear either way, but man is waiting causing angst :P)

Don't lose heart

Surely there's an "if we don't find anthing better" pile or maybe a "we have an awful lot like this one" pile still in consideration, maybe even a stack of "most of these are yes, but let's see how many end up in this stack before we call anyone, just in case."

I do think it would be humane of them to start sending out emails to the "not this time around, bub" stack.

Mad Props

Nice.  The simultaneous shoutout to Damon Knight and Harry Harrison with some Charlton Heston thrown in.  Good shoutout.

?

Has anyone been passed on? I'm curious if they're sending out those emails as well, or if they wait to the last minute for that.

Patience, young grasshopper.

Free yourself of the desire for Clarion responses.

If a writer writes about writing but doesn't write, is that writer a writer?

Meditate on this, and on the reason that you applied to Clarion in the first place.  You will find that the writer was within you all along.  Or that you are distracting yourself with illusions, being led off the path to publication by the Demons of Forums and Blogging and Research and Past Action, and you must seek again the true Way of the writer.

Let not the mere act of waiting lead us to ask the same question in a thousand ways -- did I not get in?  Instead, savor this time of possibility, of hope, of excitement, and channel the energy into an act of Creation.

Only then will you truly be a Master.

Wise advice

Considering that I run a website entirely devoted to the Art of Writing Without Writing, I'd have to agree... A writer who writes about writing without writing is not really writing (unless the object is to dominate search engine results for writing, write, or writer).

It is possible to write, and

You know, it is possible to write, and also be curious, which happens to be my approach.

Many Paths to the Same End

Absolutely.  I was just trying to lighten the mood.  Also, curiosity killed the cat, probably from high blood pressure.  That's why I give my cat Catnip flavored Prozac, answer all of her questions promptly, and make sure she has access to the internet.

I also encourage her to accept that which she cannot change, and focus on that which she can.  She just glares at me when I say that though.  Probably because she knows I'm full of it.

Randy

:)

It's easy for those who are in to tell others to be patient, yes? Not that I'm in.

It's hard to concentrate when things are like this.  Kinda surprised there isn't more chatter in the online blogopolis.

I 2nd

Yeah, see, sadly I'm fully capable of multi-tasking which means I can freak out with waiting angst *while* also doing other things.

Stupid brain, why can't you only focus on one thing at a time?

Frankly I'm sort of glad there isn't more chatter.  It would just be more things to obsess over ;)

One more for the Class of '09

The Search for Spock...er, Acceptances

I went net surfing toda in search of any hint of Clarion (east or west) acceptances.  After a lot of false leads and really old blog postings, I found a current brag I hadn't ssen before.  Apparently I found an acceptance announcement from...Jordan Lapp.  Doh!  I think he's got three of the slots to himself.  :)

It's been too quiet here.  Thought I'd say something.

I guess East will be contacting people this week if they're supposed to let everyone know by the 20th.  Is it possible the workshops are telling people not to share their acceptances?  I don't see why they would, but I guess it's possible.

**Secondary thought from real time.**

Okay...that's hilarious.  My daughter (2 years old, precocious, rambunctious, adorable) is watching Ni Hao, Kai-Lan, a children's cartoon with a Chinese protagonist.  Apparently today's lesson is about "when waiting is really hard for you, just do something you like to do!"  Lesson learned, Kai-Lan.  I'll go write something -- I like to do that.

About the phone calls

Hey all.  I thought I might be able to help some people relax.

First of all, I don't have any involvement with admissions and I don't know who will be accepted.

Students will be admitted gradually over the coming weeks.  This is generally done with a phone call.  The order in which people are called doesn't mean anything; you can't figure out any results based on it. Just in case anyone was overanalyzing it.  Some people do get called fairly early, but others won't get called until later.

I wouldn't expect to hear anything for another 1-2 weeks, for most people.

Every year, I offer a challenge to those who are waiting: Draft another short story before you hear from Clarion West.  Since you don't know exactly when they'll contact you, you don't know exactly how long you have.  I'd guess you have at least a week, but maybe not a lot more--so get cracking on it.

Previous applicants have said that this distraction helps a ton with anxiety, because whether you get into CW or not, you have a new story to circulate.  And that's the real point, after all.  CW is not a magic pass into the world of publishing; you still have to write stories.

Good luck!  And for those who want a challenge... log off and GO!

Ok, did that...

Wrote a story. Rewrote it. Polished it.  Sent it off to languish in a submission line.

Now what?  :)

Oh yeah, back to going crazy :P

The application of reason is

The application of reason is really a poor way to handle this, Vylar.

Um...wait...(whispers to someone off screen) He's right?....

That's a great idea, Vylar.

I've finished three stories in the past month, two of which are already in circulation, and the third is waiting for another run with the editing hatchet.  And there are plenty of others waiting in the wings.

It's all about the writing.  It will always be about the writing.

Sandra

Still Writing

I'm currently pounding out a brand new story.  I brainstormed on it a while ago, but I only started it this month (last weekend I think).  I'm over 7000 words now.  Was never supposed to be longer than a short and I'm just getting to the climax.  I will likely cut a bunch out when it's finished; you know how first drafts are.  So I am working on the challenge you set, Vylar.  I expect the first draft to be finished before I hear.  I will strive to achieve a workable second draft, too.  However, I will be more than happy to see my deadline arrive before I get there if it means relieving the anticipation.

Okay.

Now you're just being cruel. ;)~

Just to clarify and

Just to clarify and summarize:

Three of us are in so far:

Jordan

Randy

Amman

Is that about right?

Sanity for a moment

No one but Jordan has definitively declared acceptance.  So I assume that only Jordan is in as of this posting.  Amman just enjoys multiple negatives and Randy...well, we are getting a feel for Randy.

I'm pretty sure that anyone who gets in will leave a clear and coherent message to that effect.  If you want verification, try checking the individual's blog.  I know Randy has one.

Fun is fun (pause to appreciate the depth of that), but my health insurance does not cover pacemakers if their need stems from internet posts.

Maybe we can set up a thread JUST for formal acceptances?

I think this thread is the

I think this thread is the formal thread for that.  I just got a little drunk with waiting and forgot to remain formal, ripped off my tux and started dancing on the tables.  I shall refrain from doing so in the future.  Sorry.  Embarassed

I'm just glad nobody got pictures of me doing that one dance with the wine, the candle and the banana cream mousse.

Wait.  Nobody took pictures, right?

Randy

I have pictures.  My spies

I have pictures.  My spies are everywhere, especially in the banana cream mousse.  That a specialty...

Although decorum prevents me from posting the pictures, I have to ask...  What's the deal with crimson leather corset and the pelican?  I mean, if you were wearing the corset it might make sense.  Or even if the pelican was wearing the corset for that matter.  Or then again, if you were wearing the pelican and the corset was eating the banana cream mousse while the wine ran away with the candle, then yes, the picture might make more sense...

Yes, I think this shall puzzle me for some time to come.

Waiter!  Another cask of amontillado!  Tonight, we ride!

{{Congratulations!!!}}

That is not not not not not

That is not not not not not true

So, if my boolean math is

So, if my boolean math is correct, amman was just messing with us. So it's just Randy and me so far?

Yeah, just messing around.

Yeah, just messing around.

No, Sorry, a Humor Short-Circuit

No.  Sorry.  Guess my humor was a bit too obscure this time.

I have not received a call.  Yet.

I was saying I got a call in the future, but can't remember when.

Ha ha.  See.  Funny.

Not.

I was just thinking we'd beat this horse to death, with all the requests for clarifications and information and trying to hyper-analyze the how and when we might be contacted about our status, so was just having fun with the topic, trying to release some tension.  Again, I apologize for any confusion.

And no, I am not saying this because the timelords have a raygun to my head and are upset that I've risked a rupture in space/time by revealing future events.

That is definitely not the situation here.

Nope.

I hereby slap myself three times for any additional anxiety or doubts I may have stirred up, and shall not post again on this particular thread until and unless I actually do receive a Clarion Call to action.

Randy

What Day Is It?

They called me.  BUT due to a radical (and probably ill-advised) experiment I threw together while bored at 1am on March 6th, 2009 -- involving a microwave, a sock monkey, two teaspoons of butter, an Xbox 360 HD-DVD Player (borrowed -- I luckily wasn't suckered into that particular purchase), the motherboard from my Commodore 128 (a purchase I was suckered into, but I was young), the AI chip from a Furby, 1 teaspoon vanilla, and, of course, banana cream pudding -- I am currently jumping around randomly in time and space and so am not sure exactly WHEN I got that call.  It might have been March 31st.

Randy

Congratulations?

And if they're not warranted, I'll slap you around with Selma Hayek's left foot.

Sandra

I am wounded, but I am not slain.  I shall lay me down and rest awhile then rise and fight again. -- John Byrden

You may have to slap me.

You may have to slap me.  But we won't know for sure until March 31st in your conventional timestream.  The convergence of multiple space-time paradoxes into a single now have rendered my memory of future events questionable at best.

Sorry for any confusions.  I was just passing time.

Randy

Slaughterhouse Five?

Is it just me or are these posts becoming less informative instead of more.

As long as we're playing word games, they called me too.  They being my mother, the Fraternal Order of Police, my mother again, my daugter's babysitter, my credit card company, Sprint, and someone looking for Bubba.

-Oso

I know.  Evil of me.  I

I know.  Evil of me.  I maxed out your credit cards buying parts for my robot army, posing as Bubba, your duly appointed power of attorney!  Bwah-ha-ha-HAAAAA!  And don't think it will stop at the Fraternal Order of Police.  DHS should be knocking on your door any day now looking to sieze the enriched infinitonium.

And by the way, if you get a call to confirm that the parts for your Salma Hayek interactive "companion" bot have arrived from Japan, please let them know they forgot to pack the left foot.

Thanks.
