"A Hail of Pebbles and Dust" (originally published in Astropoetica, Winter 2011)

There is a similar concept in our tribal traditions.
The angelic beings highest in the hierarchy
are constantly being burned alive
due to their closeness to the Infinite Light,
and they are constantly recreated
to be able to fulfill their purpose.
So it is with this planet.

You need to know I am a surveyor,
secular, levelheaded, assimilated.
I cannot help but think of the words of the ancients.

If you observe this planet you will notice
that the side close to the sun is so hot
that even the rocks evaporate,
and they cool down and fall
as a hail of pebbles and dust
on the dark side.
The planet is tidally locked—
the face it shows to the sun is always the same.

I cannot help but think of the words of the ancients—
my body shivers,
and my shudders make a faint tremor run through my ship.

Outside, rocks are raining.

Bio

I am a Hungarian Jewish woman, a psycholinguist and a popular-science journalist. My Hungarian-language fiction and nonfiction have been published in various professional venues, including Galaktika, Átjáró, and Galaktika Fantastic Books. I have recently started to write speculative fiction and poetry in English, and my work has been published in a number of small markets like Stone Telling (the recent queer issue), Innsmouth Free Press, and Astropoetica. I also have a short story forthcoming in the second volume of the Mirror Shards anthology.

Publications

  • "This Secular Technology" in Mirror Shards Volume 2 (Forthcoming in 2012)
  • "My Planet/Silence and Noise" in Comets and Criminals (Forthcoming in 2012)
  • "The Handcrafted Motions of Flight" in Stone Telling, 2012
  • "A Hail of Pebbles and Dust" in Astropoetica, 2011
  • Writing Description

I write about orthodox Jewish women blowing stuff up with the aid of futuristic weaponry, the power of the mind, or both. In free verse.

    Writing Goals

I find it difficult to finish stories. I also find it difficult to find some time for writing fiction, period. So I decided to combine these two goals: my goal is to finish five short stories OR write 30,000 words, whichever is fulfilled first.
