Excerpt

“You’ve got to commit to this!” urged the professor, from above the walls of the tank. “You’ve gotta be the frog! Find the frog within you! Try another hop!”

Mike took a breath, and sprung from the lilypad, half expecting it to shoot backwards and drop him into the water. It didn’t, at least not much, and he covered just enough distance to land on the next one, about two feet away. There, a brief flailing moment kept him upright, hands resting on the pad, trying to keep himself stable.

“There you go!” the professor’s voice came. “I think they’re starting to warm to you!”

“Are you sure this is safe?” Katie’s voice sounded very far away.

“Professor?” That was a new voice, very serious-sounding. “What’s this about you shrinking students for some frog experiment?”

“Of course I didn’t. It’s much easier to make gigantic frogs than it is to make tiny humans! If I shrunk my grad students, I’d have to enlarge them again!”

Bio

One hot June day in Iowa, I packed all my belongings that would fit into the back of my car and headed west to attend the 2010 Clarion West workshop. Now I'm an editor, freelance writer, and aspiring creative type.

Writing Description

When I'm not looking for ways to subvert genre by focusing on less-acknowledged people and events, I like to find the bizarre within the ordinary, make the mundane extraordinary, and show characters befuddled by the world. Or something.

Writing Goals

I'll be writing a series of short stories about bizarre and random events.

Fundraising Goals

I would like to inspire some donations.
